Philippines: Portraits of Recovery

In emergencies, it is critical that crisis-affected communities have access to information and life-saving communications to them to better understand issues that affect their lives and to make the informed decisions for themselves and their communities. Communications with Communities (CwC) is an emerging field in humanitarian response that seeks to address this information gap.

This video shares the story of Fred Padernos, station manager at Radyo Abante in Tacloban, the Filipino city hardest hit by Typhoon Haiyan in Nov 2013 as he works to provide vital information and communications to his community after the typhoon.

Building Back Safer and Self-sufficiency: IOM Shelter Programme a Year On

In the early hours of November 8, 2013, Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) made landfall in Guiuan, Eastern Samar. What followed after was an onslaught of heavy rains and storm surges that went on to ravage several areas in the Philippines in incalculable proportions.

Since ground zero, the Shelter Program of IOM’s Emergency Preparedness and Response Unit has not just been providing assistance, but also empowering internally displaced people (IDP) by encouraging them to be proactive in building back safer shelters for their respective families.

Some members of the team are also Yolanda survivors and in helping others, they found the inspiration, determination, and strength to start again.

This is a look back on the journey that the IOM Shelter Programme has started with its beneficiaries. A journey filled with stories of hope, resilience, and empowerment.
